NHS Weight Management Programmes

If you would like extra support to lose weight, this selection of NHS programmes could help you.

Newcastle Specialist Adult Weight Management Service (Tier 3)

What it offers

Specialist support to help you lose weight and improve your health.

Support may include:

  • Specialist dietitians
  • Clinical psychologists
  • Consultant doctors
  • Support workers

You can have group or one-to-one sessions, with support for at least 6 months and up to 18 months.

Who it is for

Adults who:

  • Have a BMI of 50 or above, or
  • Have a BMI of 40 or above and have used a weight management service before, or
  • Have a BMI of 35 or above and a health condition linked to their weight, and have used a weight management service before.

How to access it

You will need to be referred by your GP practice.

Healthier You – NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

What it offers

A 9-month programme to help you reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

It includes:

  • 13 group sessions, each lasting 90 minutes
  • Face-to-face, online or digital support
  • Practical advice to help you make healthier lifestyle changes

Who it is for

Adults who are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. You will need a recent blood test showing that your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not yet in the diabetes range.

How to access it

You can self-refer if you have had a recent blood test that shows you are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

You can also call the programme on 0800 092 1191 if you have an eligible blood test.

Oviva’s Tier 3 Weight Management Programme

What it offers

24-month medicated pathway

Specialist access to GLP-1 medicines, with support from psychology and dietetics teams.

6-month non-medicated pathway

Support from psychology and dietetics teams, together with lifestyle coaching.

Who it is for

Adults aged 18 or over who:

  • Have a BMI of 35 or above, and
  • Have a health condition linked to their weight.

The programme is delivery remotely so you will need access to a smartphone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.

How to access it

You will need a referral from your GP. Get in touch with your Practice.

Healthwise Programme

What it offers

A 12-week programme to help you become more active and improve your health.

You will receive:

  • A personalised gym plan
  • Reduced-cost gym membership for up to 2 years

Who it is for

People who are overweight or living with obesity and have another health condition. Patients will need to pay for their own gym membership – at a discounted rate – to access the programme.

How to access it

You will need to be referred by a healthcare professional. Speak to your GP practice.

NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme

What it offers

A 12-month programme to help some people with type 2 diabetes lose weight and improve their blood sugar levels.

The first 12 weeks involve a low-calorie diet using specially prescribed soups, shakes and bars. This is followed by gradually reintroducing food and building healthier long-term habits, with support from a Health and Wellbeing Coach.

Who it is for

Some adults with recently diagnosed type 2 diabetes who meet the programme’s weight and health criteria.

How to access it

You will need a referral from your GP. Get in touch with your Practice.

NHS Digital Weight Management Programme

What it offers

A free 12-week online programme to help you manage your weight.

There are different levels of support, from digital support only to personalised coaching.

Who it is for

Adults living with obesity who also have type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or both.

The programme is for people with a BMI of 30 or above. You will need access to a smartphone, tablet or computer with an internet connection.

How to access it

Speak to your GP practice about how you can be referred.

Eating Distress North East

What it offers

Support for anyone affected by eating distress.

This may include support for you, or for someone you are worried about.

Who it is for

Anyone affected by eating distress.

You can refer yourself through the Eating Distress North East website.
