Nexplanon Contraceptive Implant
Guidance on the use of the Nexplanon contraceptive implant was updated in May 2026. Implants can now be used safely and effectively for up to 5 years.
What is Nexplannon?
Nexplanon is a small, flexible plastic rod that is inserted under the skin of your upper arm.
It releases a steady, low dose of progesterone to help prevent pregnancy. It is more than 99% effective.
The implant can be fitted by specially trained doctors and nurses.
Appointments are available for patients registered at GP practices in Gosforth and Jesmond through our Enhanced Access service, including weekend appointments.
What has changed
The Nexplanon implant is now licensed for use for up to 5 years. Previously, it was licensed for 3 years.
In May 2026, The College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare announced that research showed the implant remained highly effective for up to 5 years, with no new safety concerns identified.
What this means for you
Existing implants will now be replaced every 5 years instead of every 3 years.
If you are approaching the third anniversary of your current implant, your next replacement invitation will now be scheduled for 2 years later, in line with the updated guidance.
